The soundtrack to the 1980 movie Xanadu featured songs on Side One by the film's star, Olivia Newton-John, written by her long-time producer, John Farrar. The songs on Side Two were written and performed by the Electric Light Orchestra. The title track which closed Side Two featured Newton-John as lead vocalist. Although the film was a critical and commercial disappointment, the soundtrack was a worldwide success reaching No. 1 in Newton-John's native Australia and No. 2 in the UK. In the United States, the album peaked at No. 4 on Billboard 200 and was certified platinum. (In rival music publications Cashbox and Record World, the album spent one week atop each magazine's Pop Albums chart.)
